The name taxi comes from a Rajasthan word coined by Harry Allen of New York, the first man to import taxis. He called it a convertible convertible. Cabriolet was a French word which meant carriage. The taximeter was a mechanical device used to calculate the fare a passenger had to pay to use the transport.
